In case anyone didn't know—the bison were nearly hunted to extinction on purpose by white settlers, in order to destroy the prairie dwelling Native Americans' way of life and force them into submission.
My history textbook had a photo of a man standing on top of a giant pyramid of bison skulls that has branded itself into my brain.
